Is it racist or offensive to Scottish people to have a England flag in a window at my own house?
My son is a big fan of the England team. He recently placed an England flag in his bedroom window. A week later, the local council contacted us and ordered us to remove it as they had had a complaint, saying it was offensive. The man who contacted, through a complete slip up, revealed it was a Scottish family who had complained, saying it was racist and offensive to their culture. Now my 8 year old son is unhappy and I am wondering if this is right. Why can’t we place an England flag in our own country?? I come from Nottingham, England

no because your just representin and it’s ur property any waysz
Maybe if it was Scottland.
But its England.
Don’t take it down!!!!!
just think of it this way…. in america, you hang a big flag (Confederate flag) in your window while in the north…. do you think its offensive… i dont… just a way to express opinion or what you like.
i think its just a rival thing. you know….
i guess its kinda like the confederate flag dilemma here in america….
you could talk to the family (if you know which family it is) about it…or just hang the flag up somewhere in his room away from the window. at least that way you compromise and everyone gets a little bit of something.
It can’t be racist, race is not about which country you come from, that’s nationality. I don’t see how it can be offensive either, all it says is “people from England live in this house”. It doesn’t say “we hate Scotland and think England is better”, unless some people are being extremely sensitive.
well I find the union jack offensive or as we call it in Ireland the butchers apron so im sure the scots could find your flag offensive just as easily
yes you can have a flag in your room, if they don’t like it then they shouldn’t be living in England. You or I wouldn’t go to scotland and complain about there being scottish flags everywhere, that would be ridiculous.
Theres nothing the council or your neighbours can do about it so i say get an even bigger flag and drape it over the front of the house just to make a point
Displaying a flag from any country shouldn’t be considered racist, especially if that is where you are from originally. Seems like your neighbor is a little over sensitive. Depending on where you are located I doubt there would be any law unless its a HOA rule that you might be breaking.
Okay, I’m from Scotland and I have to say, I’m 100% on your sons side. A flag isn’t racist, it’s just a symbol of support for your country. I bet they wouldn’t have complained if it was an American flag or something. It’s not racist or offensive in anyway to Scottish people and the family probably just complained to be awkward.
man, if the Brits aren’t busy hatin’ the Frenchies, they are hatin’ the Irish and if they aren’t hatin’ the Irish, they are hatin’ on each other?
If it’s true (it isn’t) all you have to do is phone the Daily Mail and it will be round your house like a shot to castigate the wayward council.
It it’s true (it isn’t) then all those people with the English flag in their cars will find themselves stopped by the police.
It it’s true (it isn’t) then you will be able to quote the powers under which the council gave you an enforcement order, they will be listed on the enforcement notice.
Have you got nothing better to do than make stuff up?
I don’t think it is racist. I really find this hard to believe. I am not saying you made this up. But it is just that ridiculous that something like this has happend to you.
Contact the press about this, it is right up the Daily Mail’s street. They love things like this and will kick up a big horrible stink.
Those Scottish people need to get a life! Seriously if they find it offensive why are they living in England?
Why are Scottish people etc allowed their flags here but we can’t have ours in our own country?!
Is it in England where this happened? because even if it isn’t, Scottish people, welsh people etc still have their flags in England! It’s the same principles!
They’re obviously just a.rseholes who have nothing better to do with their time.
If I saw someone. here in Scotland, with an England flag, I wouldn’t think anything of it. It wouldn’t offend me in any way, and I certainly wouldn’t go to the hassle of reporting it.
I don’t understand how you know it was a Scottish family though. I would have thought that they kept it confidential if someone makes a complaint.
If it was me, I’d just put it back up again.
