becoming a nurse? Anyone with experience? (nottingham uni)?

nottingham home

I would love to find out more information about nursing in the UK

Just finishing off my Alevels atm, with D,E,C in sociology, science and english, not great I know!

but very interested in studying at nottingham university doing a general nurse degree and possibly leading on to midwifery if this is possible?

Just wanted to know how it works? and is it tricky/ competitive to go onto midwifery after becoming a general nurse?

and how full on is the studying at university for general nursing?(lectures and work exp per week?) How much time do you get off to do independant studies at home?

Would you recommend becoming a nurse? :)
So many questions!

(btw i am currently trying to organise work experience)
but any info would be fab

Thanks x

If you haven’t looked already, the NHS website has a lot of the information you are looking for:

After you get your nursing degree, you can fast track to a midwifery one in about 18months, many people I work with go on to midwifery after nursing, so it can’t be that difficult.

The studying part is roughly 6 weeks in lectures then 6 weeks on nursing placements (working on wards etc with other nurses), repeated over 3 years. It’s full time, five days a week, but there are plenty of study days incorporated through this.

My only concern is that your “A” level results will not qualify you to be accepted on a degree course, though some uni’s do still offer a diploma course in nursing, which will still result in you becoming a qualified nurse.

Being a nurse works for me, I love it, though it is hard work, and can be very unrewarding at times

Feel free to email me if you have any other questions.
